Barto Burguera M.D, Ph.D. is Chairman of Endocrinology and Metabolism Institute. He joined the Cleveland Clinic as staff physician and Director of Obesity programs in the Department of Endocrinology Metabolic Institute and the Bariatric Institute, on September of 2013. He is also Professor of Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and has a joint appointment in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine.
His clinical and academic interests are focused on the field of obesity, particularly the role of bariatric medicine and non-surgical weight-loss interventions to treat obesity and diabetes. He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters in the field of obesity and diabetes. Within EMI, he developed an evidence-based integrated weight management program with shared medical appointments, which is being offered face-to-face as well as virtually.
He has served as a principal investigator, co-investigator on several federal and pharmaceutical funded projects, focusing on obesity therapy, both in the US and in Spain. He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters in the field of obesity and Diabetes.ย He has organized several national and international symposium around Obesity and he is currently the Director of the Obesity Summit at Cleveland clinic.ย He is also involved in several Obesity and Endocrinology Review courses in Spanish.
He is currently the Principal Investigator of 2 large multimillion obesity and diabetes clinical trials, entitled โReal world effectiveness of combining an employer-based weight management program with medication for chronic weight management in employees with obesityโ and โAn Obesity-centric Approach with and without Anti-obesity medications Compared to the Usual-care Approach to Management of Patients with Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes in an Employer Setting: A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trialโ.
